WESTFIELD, Los Angeles County — Trees lining Westfield’s residential streets may appear to be part of adjacent yards, but the Westfield Park Recreation and Parkways District is reminding residents that trees within county road easements are generally under Los Angeles County jurisdiction.
The district explains that parkway trees planted by the county are not subject to unrestricted private pruning or removal. Its published guidance warns that work performed without county permission may result in penalties.
Before hiring a tree company
Residents should identify whether the tree is within the roadway easement, contact the appropriate county tree or public works program and obtain any required authorization before scheduling trimming, removal or major root work. A private landscaper’s advice does not replace county approval.
The district maintains certain community recreation amenities but is not the permitting authority for every street tree. Residents can contact the park board at 310-872-4933 or use its official contact page to clarify the appropriate agency.
For imminent hazards from a fallen tree or blocked emergency route, use the appropriate public safety or county service channel rather than attempting dangerous work independently.
